TALKS FOR PROFESSIONALS

Children’s Behaviour and Classroom Dynamics: When Behaviour Spreads, Who’s Really in Charge?

Boys, girls and group dynamics – who sets the rules in children's social groups?

About the talk

A practical talk on children's social groups, negative group dynamics, social development and the hidden patterns that influence children's wellbeing and learning.

Why do some classroom groups develop unhealthy social dynamics, where certain children take control, others are left out, and disruptive behaviour becomes more appealing than learning? We explore how peer relationships, group behaviour and classroom dynamics shape children's social development, inclusion and engagement in school.

Children shape each other’s behaviour in both positive and negative ways. In some groups, excluding others, challenging adults or showing little interest in learning can become a way to fit in and gain popularity. Over time, these behaviours can spread and become part of the group culture, making it harder for children to build positive friendships, stay motivated and engage in learning.

But what happens to children’s independence and social judgement when fitting in with the group becomes more important than making their own choices?

From negative group dynamics to positive, inclusive peer relationships

Drawing on developmental psychology and behaviour analysis, we explore:

  • Social status and group hierarchies: Why do some children gain popularity and social status by excluding others, challenging authority or disrupting activities?

  • Peer pressure and independence: Why do children go along with the group, even when they would rather make a different choice?

  • Children’s wellbeing and learning: How do negative group dynamics affect children’s motivation, participation and social development?

  • The role of adults: How might teachers and educators unintentionally reinforce the very patterns of behaviour they are trying to change?

  • Positive and inclusive peer relationships: Building positive and inclusive peer relationships:

Who really shapes the dynamics of a group of children – the children themselves, the adults or the patterns of behaviour that have become so familiar that no one even notices them anymore?
