Out of bed - back to school
An evidence-informed talk on school attendance difficulties, school avoidance and gradual return to school, offering practical strategies to strengthen collaboration between families and schools when students, parents and teachers feel stuck.
About the talk
How can we help children return to school when even the thought of attending feels overwhelming?
School attendance difficulties rarely have a single cause. Anxiety, academic demands, peer relationships, past experiences and unhelpful patterns of behaviour can all contribute to making the return to school increasingly difficult.
We explore how schools and families can work together to understand what is maintaining school avoidance and develop a realistic, step-by-step plan for returning to school.
Through clear goals, gradual reintegration, agreed strategies and regular progress reviews, we work towards making school attendance manageable and achievable again.
Sometimes, the journey back to school starts with just five minutes – and that's a meaningful first step.

During this talk, participants will explore:
Knowledge
We explore anxiety, worries, peer relationships, academic demands and the patterns that can maintain school avoidance. Because persistent school absence is rarely just about not wanting to go to school.
Reflextion
When does well-intentioned support turn into avoidance? And what happens when days spent at home lose their structure? We explore how adult expectations, support strategies and individual accommodations can help children return to school – or unintentionally reinforce school avoidance.
Practical stratgies
Gain practical strategies for setting realistic expectations, clear goals and monitoring progress. We explore what children need to practise at school and how to structure days at home to support a gradual and successful return to school.
Bridging the gap
How can schools, parents and educational psychologists work towards the same goals? We focus on shared expectations, clearly defined responsibilities and consistent plans for both school days and days at home, ensuring that children receive coordinated support and appropriate expectations.
